for our organization.”

Tony Cappelli and his wife, Sandy, started Steven’s
Hope after the loss of their son, Steven. Five
months into the pregnancy, the Cappelli’s
found out that their unborn son had severe heart
problems and would not live. They continued the
pregnancy hoping to donate his organs to another
child. In December of 2000, Steven was born and
lived for a short 32 hours. Unfortunately, donating
his organs was not possible. This left Tony and
Sandy, looking for answers. What they found was
a need to assist other families going through similar
situations.
“We live in Upland,” says Sandy Cappelli. “We
were unaware that in the case of a child receiving
a heart or a liver transplant, they are discharged
in as little as ten days after the surgery. Then,
they are required to stay in a close proximity
to the hospital for up to six months. In our situation,
Upland was too far away from Loma Linda.”
That is when Sandy went to Tony with an idea to
start a charity.
Tony added, “The other issue is that when
a child needs 24-hour care and has to be in a hospital
30, 300 or 3,000 miles away from home, the financial
hardships can become overwhelming. We try to reduce
that financial hardship and keep the family unit
together. We had one girl that had a hard time
with her treatments. But on Wednesdays and Thursdays,
she was excited because her family was going to
be together at a Steven’s Hope apartment
on the weekend.”
“Steven’s Hope is a hospital hospitality
house,”
explains Tony Cappelli. “We focus on the
child and the family that needs a home away from
home for more than 30 days. Our program, Housing
for Hope, provides families that are outside of
that immediate hospital proximity a clean two-bedroom,
two bath apartment to live in just minutes from
Loma Linda University Medical Center and Children’s
Hospital.”
